It is the inevitable fate of all offshore assets that when they cease to be financially viable they will be decommissioned. This can be as little as 5 years after first oil but, typically this is after 30 years or more of service.
During their life times the assets will have undergone a great deal of maintenance and modification and these modifications can often result in situations where there is multi diameter pipework or the removal of pigging facilities making many pipeline unpiggable.
